Be sure to pick a bone that fits your dogs size and chewing abilities to avoid choking incidents. If your dog does not finish the bone during their chewing session, pick it up and put it away for another day. Comfort toys develop when a dog is young and dealing with separation anxiety from their mother to a new home but many dogs do not outgrow their comfort toys. However, this type of toy still offers benefits to an adult dog. If you have to travel to unfamiliar places, leave them with a sitter, or vet for a few days, they offer your dog a feeling of comfort and have a reassuring effect.
A bored dog is very dangerous as they will often find something else to chew, which usually means your furniture. If you can try to encourage your dog to play with their toys then they will not notice that you are away from the house. There are several different styles of dog toys and which ones you choose for your dog will depend on your taste and budget. There are several motivational toys available and some that you can fill with treats and your dog has to try to empty the toy to retrieve them; these are good for dogs that bore easily.
An example is a plastic cube with treats inside which the dog must find a way to get out of the cube. The cube is also adjustable, so as your dog figures out how to get the treats out, you can make it harder so he wont get bored. Another example of this type of dog toys is a rubber ball that helps clean your pets teeth when he plays with it. Your dog bites the slits in the ball. His teeth sink into the grooves. The grooves stimulate the gums and clean the teeth, and dispense treats or kibble for your pet.
