Thelma Townsend. Dog Beds. January 18th , 2018.
There are many different types of dog beds out there, and picking the right one for your dog can be quite difficult. You don t want to buy an expensive bed only to watch it go unused as your dog sleeps on the couch or (even worse?) on your bed. This guide will help you get an idea of what the different dog beds offer and which might be best for your furry friend. The first thing to consider is size. You dont want to get one of the smaller dog beds for your puppy, especially if its a large breed. You dont want your dog to quickly outgrow its new bed, so be sure to factor in growth before purchasing a new sleeping space for your puppy.
Aside from all the considerations of warmth, comfort, security and style that weve mentioned, you may also want to choose a bed that is machine washable, because as we know, small dogs are pretty fussy about their space being neat and clean. As your dog gets older, its likely that he may develop Canine Arthritis or Hip Dysplasia, especially if he is overweight or a larger breed. You may not be aware of the different types of dog beds and what it is that your dog might require. An orthopedic dog bed can be used as a way to delay the onset of some common problems in older or overweight dogs, such as Hip Dyslpasia and Arthritis.
Measure your dog while sleeping. If your dog curls up, measure your curled up dog at his or her widest point. Also measure your dog from the top of his or her head to the point where the tail meets the buttocks. Add 15 cm to that and you will know the minimum size you need to think about when considering beds. If your dog tends to stretch out when sleeping, add another 25 cm to that.
Another type of bed that little dogs seem to like, are ones shaped like caves. These are quite novel beds which are similar in appearance to a den. Remember dogs originally were raised in dens that resemble caves you may have seen some abandoned animal dens, often built on the side of a hill. Do you see the connection here? Also, the hood on these cavetype beds can be pulled down over the pet for an even greater feeling of security. Likewise, its easy to image in the past, that the mother of a pack would guard her cave by pulling some brush across the entrance.
For those of us that live in colder areas where the floor of our house stays a bit chilly all year a nice soft dog bed can keep the dog off of the cold floor and keep their body at a comfortable temperature. Arthritic dogs tend to benefit from dog beds the most in this scenario. Does your dog get on the furniture? Maybe they do this to be comfortable? I think so. If your dog gets on the furniture a nice cozy dog bed of their own may very well curb their desire to get on your stuff. The dog bed will become their home where they feel safe and enjoy spending time.
