Francisca Fulton. Dog Beds. January 21st , 2018.
When you find that your dog is constantly getting on the sofa and making a mess with all the dog hair, its definitely time to invest in a large dog bed. These days you can get large dog beds that look like real furniture so they dont look out of place in your home. Larger breeds need extra cushioning as they are prone to Arthritis and Hip Dysplasia, therefore sleeping on the floor isnt really an option with a large dog. When buying a large dog bed, you need to think about how your dog sleeps. Does he curl up or spread out, possibly a little of both depending on the weather and other factors.
Cost is another thing to think about when searching for a dog bed. One of the custom dog beds on the market can get up into the high dollar amount and cost way more than you care to spend. The great thing is that there are many wonderful and affordable dog bed on the market. What is the benefit to a dog bed? Well dog beds can help cushion the bones and the joints of you favorite dog. Older dogs, overweight dogs and dogs that have bone or joint issues benefit drastically from a good dog bed. Believe it or not there are orthopedic dog beds out there and that may be the best one for your dog.
Even with a full grown animal, be sure to get a bed big enough that he or she will have room to stretch and wont feel too crowded. If you get a dog bed thats a bit on the small side, your dog may not use it. Also take note of the height of dog beds. You dont want to select a bed that is too high for your small dog. A raised bed, however, may help keep your dog warm if your house is drafty. Shape is another consideration. Dog beds come in several different shapes and looks. There are round ones, square ones, beds that look like little couches, dog beds with no sides, and beds that have raised sides all the way around.
Measure your dog while sleeping. If your dog curls up, measure your curled up dog at his or her widest point. Also measure your dog from the top of his or her head to the point where the tail meets the buttocks. Add 15 cm to that and you will know the minimum size you need to think about when considering beds. If your dog tends to stretch out when sleeping, add another 25 cm to that.
When you go to bed at night, if you go to sleep easily its probably because you have a space that feels safe and warm. So Its understandable when your small dog wants to enjoy the same warmth and relaxed feeling by being right next to you. While it may be very flattering that your dog likes to sleep on your bed, you may actually prefer him to have his own perfect spot so you both can enjoy a contented nights sleep. Thats where dog beds for small dogs come in. And this is very achievable with the beds that are designed with their needs in mind.
