Measure your dog while sleeping. If your dog curls up, measure your curled up dog at his or her widest point. Also measure your dog from the top of his or her head to the point where the tail meets the buttocks. Add 15 cm to that and you will know the minimum size you need to think about when considering beds. If your dog tends to stretch out when sleeping, add another 25 cm to that.
When you find that your dog is constantly getting on the sofa and making a mess with all the dog hair, its definitely time to invest in a large dog bed. These days you can get large dog beds that look like real furniture so they dont look out of place in your home. Larger breeds need extra cushioning as they are prone to Arthritis and Hip Dysplasia, therefore sleeping on the floor isnt really an option with a large dog. When buying a large dog bed, you need to think about how your dog sleeps. Does he curl up or spread out, possibly a little of both depending on the weather and other factors.
It is very important that you consider not only the decor of the room where you wish to place the bed but also your dogs habits. A fancy doghouse style bed, which neatly hides your dogs bed away, isnt going to be all that useful if your dog doesnt like small, enclosed spaces. You dont want to spend a lot of money on pet beds for your dog only to have him ignore it. If you are buying for a puppy, make sure you understand how big the dog will eventually grow. You will either have to buy a large bed later, or just buy one at the start. If your puppy is a larger breed it may be a waste of money to buy a small bed when he is small, as they grow fast.
Even with a coat of fur, some dogs still feel the cold, they need a little extra warmth to get them through the night. As your dog gets older, it may be feeling arthritic and be in some pain, therefore a heated dog bed may be just what the doctororvet ordered. Heated dog beds keep a constant temperature and are designed to keep the temperature at a safe level at all times. Heated dog beds have controls that give you several setting choices. Some more expensive brands are thermostatically controlled thereby keeping a consistent temperature, varying only by a degree or two.
Size matters when choosing dog beds. It should be big enough to fit your dog comfortably. This may seem obvious, but dont shop for beds without actually measuring your dog. Leave room for your dog to grow if your dog is young, and leave room for your dog to get fatter if he is older. Also, dog beds should leave dogs with enough room to turn and move around in them.
