Cathy Conner. Dog Beds. January 24th , 2018.
Not all dogs are allowed in the house, even in winter, so a heated bed for kennels, garages or the porch can be a necessity in some climates. A heated bed can take some of the sting out of being in the dog house. Prolonged exposure to cold can lead to a variety of problems for your pet such as: cracked paws, infections, dehydration and in extreme cases even hypothermia. If your dog is shivering and cold this can weaken his immune system. If health issues werent enough, your dog will be just plain miserable.
Another type of bed that little dogs seem to like, are ones shaped like caves. These are quite novel beds which are similar in appearance to a den. Remember dogs originally were raised in dens that resemble caves you may have seen some abandoned animal dens, often built on the side of a hill. Do you see the connection here? Also, the hood on these cavetype beds can be pulled down over the pet for an even greater feeling of security. Likewise, its easy to image in the past, that the mother of a pack would guard her cave by pulling some brush across the entrance.
Even with a full grown animal, be sure to get a bed big enough that he or she will have room to stretch and wont feel too crowded. If you get a dog bed thats a bit on the small side, your dog may not use it. Also take note of the height of dog beds. You dont want to select a bed that is too high for your small dog. A raised bed, however, may help keep your dog warm if your house is drafty. Shape is another consideration. Dog beds come in several different shapes and looks. There are round ones, square ones, beds that look like little couches, dog beds with no sides, and beds that have raised sides all the way around.
Some models have detachable, chewresistant cords. Some even come with vibrating massage. You can also purchase a bed that both heats and cools allowing complete comfort. Be sure to check whether the bed you are considering is made for indoor or outdoor use. Smaller heated cushions and mats are very convenient and can be moved around the house, depending on your dogs current favorite nap zone. You might think of just using the old electric blanket off your bed, but thats not a good idea.
These heated dog beds are ideal for older or arthritic dogs. Heated dog beds may not be the ideal pet beds in warmer climates. In hot climates, dog beds are available with cooling pads. Things to Consider When Shopping for Designer Dog Beds Different breeds of dogs have different body types, build and sleeping habits. The type of bed you choose for your dog should depend on not only your dogs body type but also your dogs habits. If your dog chews things, choose a bed that is sturdy and chew proof.
